The Haringey Huskies, a brand new ice hockey team for the 2018 season competing in the NIHL (national Ice Hockey League) Div 2 playing out of Alexandra Palace.
I have been following and photographing the Huskies (and previously Racers) for a number of years and confirm whilst it is an exhilarating sport to follow its more than a challenge to capture. I am still learning. Poor lighting and shooting through a net as we have at Alexandra Palace (rather than plexiglass) are a few. Shooting wide open at f2.8 on a longish lens (70-200mm is ideal) for losing the nets. 1/1000 or 1/800 will capture most of the action though with high ISO resulting and some obvious grain.
My approach and recommendation is to use a variety of approaches try … (i) a fast shutter speed and simply capture the action – stand anywhere with a view of the goal (ii) try panning shots, i use 1/50 to highlight the sheer speed of the game – there are more opportunities around the centre line for this as they gather speed, and (iii) be nimble in swapping from a high shutter speed to a low 1/250 or 1/500 to reduce ISO after a score to capture the celebration in optimum quality.
